If you have been approved for a special enrollment period due to loss of other health coverage, the date your coverage from your DC Health Link plan begins depends on when your other coverage ends and when you select your plan. You can report this up to 60 days before your coverage ends, and the sooner you enroll, the sooner your new coverage can start.
Be sure to look at documents you receive either from your employer (if you are losing job-based coverage) or your health plan to find out what date your coverage will end. Most coverage ends on the last day of a month, even if you are leaving a job in the middle of the month.
For coverage ending on the last day of the month:
You have 120 days to pick a plan through DC Health Link, starting 60 days prior to your last day of coverage. If you select a plan before your old coverage ends, your DC Health Link coverage will start on the first of the month after your old coverage ends. If you select a plan after your old coverage ended, your DC Health Link plan will begin on the first day of the month following your plan selection, no matter when in the month you select your plan. Coverage will not start in the middle of a month.
EXAMPLE: Your old coverage ends on July 31st. Your special enrollment period runs from June 1st through September 29th.
For coverage ending in the middle of a month:
You have 60 days from the day you lose coverage to pick a plan through DC Health Link. You have the option of starting your coverage either on the first of the month your old coverage ended or the first of the month following your plan selection. Coverage will not start in the middle of a month.
